What is OLIVE? Identification name: Olea europaea L. Family: Oleaceae Habitat: native to Asia Minor and Syria, and spread to Mediterraean costal regions. Medicinal parts: leaf, oil of the fruit, bark Key chemical constituents: it contains glycosides, saponins, tannins, resin, glucose, mannite. Specifically, oleoside that is antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor; oleuropein that is antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimicrabial, antiviral; oleanolic acid that is hepatoprotective, antiviral, antitumor; carotene that is antioxidant. Properties and uses: the leaves are astringent, antiseptic, hypotensive, hypoglycaemic, diuretic. Both leaves and bark can reduce or prevent fever. The oil is nourishing and laxative, and externally it can relieve pruritis, the effects of stings or burns, and is a good vehicle for liniments. It is used for hypertension, diabetes. Curiosity: traditionally used for intermittent fever. The olive tree is one of the longest living plants on earth, because of its deep roots and strong wood, it can survive harsh conditions like drough, fire, pests. The olive tree takes 15 years to mature and begin harvesting fruit. The first flower of the tree will come when it is around four years old. One of the oldest olive trees in the world is located in Crete, Greece, and it is estimated to be around 4,000 years old and still produce olives. Caution: it can cause weight gain, diarrhea, allergic reactions in some peole. It can potentiate the effects of antidiabetic and hypotensive drugs.

The Temple of Concordia, built around 440 BC, is one of the best-preserved temples of ancient Greek architecture. It is located in Agrigento's Valley of the Temples, an archaeological site declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Concordia in Greek mythology is the Roman name for Harmony, the goddess of romantic love, harmony, and concord. In front of Temple of Concordia grows an OLIVE tree.
