In the vast majority of cases a moderate elevation of temperature has beneficial and lasting effects. I am not referring to a fever above 40° C, but to the common fever, within acceptable limits of 37° to 39° C. The benefits of this fever include: -keeping viruses and bacteria under control -promoting an effective and rapid immune response with production of antibodies -activating white blood cells T-lymphocytes to neutralize viruses and bacteria. Fever also changes the psychic state as it changes the oxidative metabolism of the brain and the perception of the world inside and outside of us. It is particularly important to remember that infants and children have often a body temperature that is irregular and variable. This is due to many factors, including the fact that their growing body has not yet established an efficient thermoregulation. Antibiotics should therefore only be used in acute bacterial infections and for short periods. |
