Almost one in three cats over the age of 10 suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is one of the most common causes of death in these cats. But the discovery of immunologist Toru Miyazaki from the University of Tokyo should help pets cope with this disease, according to the scientific portal Naked Science.
A team of scientists led by Toru Miyazaki has developed a vaccine that improves kidney function in cats. The drug has passed the stage of clinical trials.
It is reported that the basis of the vaccine is a protein - an inhibitor of macrophage apoptosis, which promotes the removal of toxins from the kidneys with the help of immunoglobulins. In his previous research in 2015, Toru Miyazaki drew attention to the fact that in the blood of cats, this protein does not always work as it should, which makes animals susceptible to kidney failure.
Today, the scientist is working to make the drug affordable for all cat owners. Mass production of the vaccine is expected in 2025.
The researchers hope that once the new development manages to eliminate the main cause of kidney disease, the life expectancy of cats can increase to 30 years - that is, twice as long as today. |
