![]() What is FISH OIL? Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential fatty acids that must be consumed in the diet. The main components of omega-3 are the long-chain polyunsaturated fats eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is the major component of lipids in the retina, brain, male reproductive tissue, myocardium. Greater food sources of omega-3 are deep-sea cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel, halibut, herring. Fish oil supplements are likely safe when taken orally at doses less than 3 grams per day. At doses greater than 3 grams per day can potentially increase risk of bleeding. | Some research showed that fish oil supplements can alleviate asthma symptoms in some patients. Some other studies found peak flow improvement and reduced medication use and cough in children with asthma. In most cases, asthma severity is reduced. |
